Lots 'o Stuff

'ello, boys and girls.

A fine day, I can tell you.

The Nichols Canyon fire is finally out. Traffic here at the bottom of the hill is nuts...'coz the LAFD is still using Hollywood Blvd as a prep area. Which means...frustrated motorists galore.

Creepiest moment of the night for me? Me phone rings at 6pm, me picks up, and me hears, "This is Channel 4. You're near the action, right?"

Me: "Uh, yeah."

Them: "Can you tell us what's going on?"

Me: "Well, 8 big fire trucks just hauled up Nichols Canyon - "

Them: "That's all we need to know. Thanks."

Click.

Dunno how they found me.

The word on the street is...the fire was started by a homeless dude...who was trying to cook his dinner. He's been arrested - and methinks I know who he is. Dude wears the same weird shorts/boots combo everyday.

Moving on - gas is up to $2.65 at the Shell on Verdugo & Hollywood Way. Not good - that guy has some of the cheapest gas in town. (Yes, Arco hits you for about $2.58, but they also get you with a hidden ATM fee.)

Bastards.

Speaking of high gas prices:

Woodward: Cheney to run in '08

Good help us all.
Aspen - Renowned journalist Bob Woodward predicts Dick Cheney will be the Republican Party's presidential nominee in 2008 and that the vice president could face Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton in a dramatic partisan showdown.
He means...the robot that's taken the place of Dick Cheney.

The REAL Dick cheney passed away after his 12th heart attack.
Speaking in the Paepcke Auditorium as part of the Aspen Institute's McCloskey Speaker Series, Woodward on Tuesday listed a number of reasons it is "highly likely" President Bush might implore Cheney to seek the Oval Office.

"He would be 67 if he ran and was elected. Reagan was 69. Republicans always like the old warhorse. ... Nixon was 68," said Woodward, best known for exposing the Watergate scandal that led to Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974. "Both parties like to nominate vice presidents. ... Cheney would do it, and I think it's highly likely, so stay tuned."
If Dick gets the nod...then --

"Lynne would be the First Lady."

Ouch.

Wonder if he'd drag Don along as his VP? Dude's been real busy lately:

Pentagon to host 9/11 march, show

Whachutalkinbout, Willis?
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon will hold a massive march and COUNTRY MUSIC concert to mark the fourth anniversary of 9/11, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said in an unusual announcement tucked into an Iraq war briefing yesterday.
Freedom and country music.

"Go together like tight jeans and Shirley, go together like..."
"This year the Department of Defense will initiate an America Supports You Freedom Walk," Rumsfeld said, adding that the march would remind people of "the sacrifices of this generation and of each previous generation.
"America Supports You Freedom Walk?" Jesus. THAT is a clunky title.

You guys can do better than that.
The march will start at the Pentagon, where nearly 200 people died on 9/11, and end at the National Mall with a show by country star Clint Black.
Maiden's last date in the states is Aug 20 at the Hyundai Pavilion in San Bernardino, so, you know, they aren't available.

"You take my life but I'll take yours, too! You fire your musket but I'll run you through! So when you're waiting for the next attack, you'd better stand there's no turning back!"

Last bit on Don:

Saddam's germ war plot is traced back to one Oxford cow

We sold anthrax to Hussein back in the 80's.

"When Clinton was President?"

No.
A BRITISH cow that died in an Oxfordshire field in 1937 has emerged as the source of Saddam Hussain’s “weapons of mass destruction” programme that led to the Iraq war.

An ear from the cow was sent to an English laboratory, where scientists discovered anthrax spores that were later used in secret biological warfare tests by Winston Churchill.

The culture was sent to the United States, which exported samples to Iraq during Saddam’s war against Iran in the 1980s. Inspectors have found that this batch of anthrax was the dictator’s choice in his attempts to create biological weapons.

*

The odyssey of the Iraqi anthrax was unravelled by Geoffrey Holland, a politics student and antiwar campaigner at the University of Sussex. The exact batch chosen by Saddam was disclosed in the CIA report by Charles Duelfer, the former UN weapons inspector, last autumn.

“Iraq declared researching different strains of B. anthracis, but settled on the American Type Culture Collection strain 14578 as the exclusive strain for use as a BW,” Mr Duelfer said.

A congressional investigation into Gulf War syndrome by Don Riegle had already uncovered invoices showing that this batch was shipped from the United States between 1986 and 1988.
A good story, but not as important as the America Supports You Freedom March.

And Clint Black.

More later...
